This unique, fun-to-watch series features an unlikely hero, Prince Bojji, and his best friend, the sarcastic shadow creature Kage.

As the first-born son of the giant Bosse, Bojji should be a logical choice to take over Bosse’s kingdom.

But Bojji is tiny, deaf, and mute. He’s also a cheerful little oddball, which initially leads people to underestimate him.

Bojji’s younger half-brother Daida appears to have a better chance of ascending the throne.

With this royal sibling rivalry as a starting point, Ranking of Kings weaves a complicated and compelling tale. Bojji goes on many adventures, trains to become stronger, and gains allies.

As the plot unravels, we learn about Faustian bargains, hidden secrets, and betrayals. And yet, through it all, Ranking of Kings maintains a sense of humor, with some really funny scenes. Bojji makes an easily likeable hero, and you will root for him to succeed.

The Ranking of Kings manga started in 2017. The first season of the anime ran in 2021-2022.

If you’re in Japan, you can watch Ranking of Kings on Netflix. The series is only available in Japanese with no subtitles or dubbing.

If you are outside of Japan, you will need a VPN to watch Netflix Japan.

This method works on both desktop PCs and mobile phones or tablets.

Enjoy! Please note that if your Netflix library doesn’t update to reflect the country you selected in your VPN, you may have to clear the Netflix cache first and try again.

You can watch Ranking of Kings on Apple’s TV app. With Apple TV, you are buying the series, rather than renting, or paying for a monthly streaming service.

Buying can be more expensive. However, you are buying a permanent copy, which can be downloaded. For example, I can watch the K-On! movie on my computer, even though Apple says the content is not available if I search for it.

Funimation and Crunchyroll are both under the same corporate umbrella, but there are differences between the two.

Even after the merger, Funimation still has some anime shows in its library which aren’t available at Crunchyroll (the .hack franchise, for example). But Crunchyroll tends to have better subtitle and dubbing language options.  Crunchyroll is also available in more countries.

Amazon also has an uncut version of the first 11 episodes. “Uncut” typically means the episodes are the same as the Blu-ray or DVD versions, which includes stuff removed from broadcast.

Amazon divides the episodes up into “season 1” and “season 2.”
